The Healing Power Of Tears (Lick Your Wounds)

Excerpt from "Mid-Life Joyride"......

Lick Your Wounds

The official Google definition of this phrase is “retire to recover one's strength or confidence after a defeat or humiliating experience.”

Going through a divorce at any age knocks the wind out of one’s sails. Going through it during mid-life will zap your emotional strength and shake your confidence, taking a toll on your heart’s equilibrium. It most definitely feels like a defeat. Whether you wanted the divorce or not, you invested years into the care and counsel of each other. To suddenly be without them is a shock. You must take the time to recoup and regroup.

In the animal kingdom, from which the term originates, saliva contains the enzyme lysozyme which is known to fight against infection. When an animal is wounded, it is common for it to lick its wounds to promote healing. Do you hear what I am saying? The first steps toward healing must come from within you! Blasting the other person, blaming circumstances, and boarding the bitter bus are counterproductive. I understand moments of frustration build and venting is a release. In fact, as it turns out, tears carry the same lysozyme enzyme. So, in a literal and figurative sense, tears are cleansing and healing. Have a good cry, or two. Scream. Punch the pillows, but don’t wallow. I hate to be blunt, but time is at a premium now. You absolutely must work through the pain and loss at your own pace. You can’t speed through it, but you cannot stop and park here either. It is uninhabitable territory.

  1. Brilliant post! I've lived through the death of two husbands. Surviving and moving forward requires lots of licking... and tears. Brenda Coffee
